Accent Training
Accent training is a form of communication coaching created for non-native American English speakers that wish to be able to commuincate easier in daily life. The focus of accent training is to improve intelligibility and communicative effectiveness by teaching the individual a combination of pronunciation, syntactic, and intonation skills. Sounding exactly like a native American English speaker is NOT the end goal in this, but rather to improve intelligibility socially and in the workplace when speaking with native American English speakers. Other goals may target confidence, ease, and spontaneity in communication.
Accent training may also be something that someone seeks out for performative purposes. Stage, screen, and voice actors can often benefit from accent training when attempting to increase the regional realism of a charachter’s speech characteristics.
*Accent training is considered speech coaching, NOT therapy. Accents are not communication disorders but rather natural characteristics of a person’s native langauge and the effect that has on either their native or second+ language.
